Understanding the spectrum, honoring individuality, and supporting unique pathways.

Overview

Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts with others, processes sensory input, and experiences the world. Autism is called a spectrum because no two individuals experience it the same way. Each person has unique strengths, challenges, and support needs.

Autism is not something to be “fixed.” It is a difference in how the brain works—and with understanding, accommodations, and support, individuals with autism can thrive in meaningful and fulfilling ways.

Common Characteristics

Autism may present differently from person to person, but some common characteristics include:

  • Differences in communication (spoken, nonverbal, or alternative communication)

  • Sensory sensitivities (sound, light, touch, textures, or movement)

  • Preference for routines and predictability

  • Challenges with social interaction or understanding social cues

  • Intense interests or focused passions

  • Differences in emotional regulation or responses to change

Not every autistic person will experience all of these, and none of them define a person’s worth or potential.

Support Looks Different for Everyone

Support for autism is not one-size-fits-all. It may include:

  • Visual supports or communication tools

  • Sensory-friendly environments

  • Predictable routines with flexibility

  • Educational and therapeutic supports

  • Emotional understanding and patience

  • Respect for autonomy and individuality

What matters most is meeting the person where they are—and listening to what support feels helpful to them.

For Families & Caregivers

Supporting someone with autism often means advocating, learning continuously, and navigating systems that don’t always feel accessible. It can be rewarding, exhausting, joyful, and overwhelming—sometimes all at once.

You are not expected to have all the answers. Support grows over time, just like understanding does.

A Note on Language

Autism language preferences vary. Some individuals prefer identity-first language (“autistic person”), while others prefer person-first language (“person with autism”). At Infinity Pathways, we respect individual preference and aim to use language that is affirming and inclusive.
