ADHD, or Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control, activity levels, and emotional regulation. ADHD is not a lack of effort, intelligence, or discipline—it is a difference in how the brain processes information, manages focus, and responds to stimulation.
ADHD can look different in each person. Some individuals are primarily inattentive, others are more hyperactive or impulsive, and many experience a combination of both. Across all presentations, ADHD impacts daily life in ways that benefit greatly from understanding, support, and appropriate accommodations.
Common Characteristics
ADHD may include a variety of experiences, such as:
Difficulty sustaining attention or focus
Challenges with organization, planning, or time management
Impulsivity or acting before thinking
High activity levels or restlessness
Emotional intensity or difficulty with regulation
Hyperfocus on interests or preferred activities
Not every individual with ADHD will experience all of these traits, and strengths often exist alongside challenges.
